Stolen PoS terminal fraud – On March 25, 2019, two suspects stole a point of sale terminal from a local restaurant located on Harvard Road just before closing time. From a period of March 25 to April 2, 2019, the terminal was used by those suspects to charge back or refund several different pre-paid credit cards to a total of over $86,000.
The suspects managed to obtain the security code for the terminals used by the restaurant from a leaked source on the internet. By obtaining this security code, they were able to charge back or refund money onto fraudulent financial cards to be used elsewhere, initially undetected.
The Guelph Police Service commenced an investigation that would identify one of the suspects as a 41-year-old male from Oshawa, Ont. The male was recently arrested in Oshawa by the Durham Regional Police Service on other fraud related charges and later brought to Guelph on Nov. 27 to face charges of fraud over $5,000 and theft under $5,000.
