Jonathan Gerrard Godfrey also had more than £1,000 of cannabis and £1,155 in cash when police searched his home in Carmarthen on November 22, 2018.

Craig Jones, prosecuting at Swansea Crown Court , said officers uncovered two large stashed of drugs in the property. They found 62g of 82% pure cocaine in a Bisto gravy tin and almost 95g of cannabis. They also found plastic grip-seal bags and mobile phones containing messages relating to drug dealing going back as far as July.

In his subsequent interview the 31-year-old told police he had bought both drugs with Bitcoin on the “dark web” and said he took them to help treat his anxiety.

Ian Ibrahim, for Godfrey, said the defendant was originally from Birmingham and had joined the Staffordshire Regiment at the age of 19 but was later medically discharged after being diagnosed with paranoia, anxiety, and depression.

The barrister said Godfrey turned to drugs and found himself with a half-a-gram a day cocaine habit which, but the summer of 2018, left him with a £2,000 debt and which in turn led him into dealing. He said: “He knows full well the level of shame and disgrace he has brought upon his family and his young son.”

Godfrey, of Catherine Street, Carmarthen, admitted possession of cocaine and cannabis with intent to supply. He has no previous convictions but does have one caution for possession of cannabis from 2015.

Judge Paul Thomas QC jailed him for two and a half years.
