What is a .onion Site?

According to Wikipedia .onion is a special-use top level domain suffix designating an anonymous onion service (also know as Hidden Service) reachable via the Tor Network. Such addresses are not actual DNS names, and the .onion TLD is not in the Internet DNS root, but with the appropriate proxy software installed internet programs such as web browsers can access sites with .onion addresses by sending the request through the Tor Network.

Tor Network is partially funded by US Government and is primarily designed to help people from being censored or monitored while on the internet. When you connect to the Tor your IP address is going through nodes in the Tor Network thus anonymizing your internet activity as shown in the picture below.

How to Access .onion Sites?

In order to access .onion websites you will need a software called Tor Browser. Download Tor Browser from the Official Tor Project website.

Install and double click on the desktop icon to launch it. Once there, you can type .onion address in the search bar.
